Guide to synchrony programs for dairy herds
Dairy Australia has developed this short guide to oestrus synchrony in Australian dairy herds. This fact sheet outlines the pros and cons of the commonly used synchrony methods, their relative complexity, cost and likely outcomes. This document does not describe synchrony programs for heifers.
This fact sheet is designed to help you understand the different methods used in lactating cows and is to be used when discussing programs suitable for your farm with your veterinarian. Reproductive advice need to be tailored to each herd and this applies especially to synchrony programs. Most methods involve the use of S4 drugs that are available only on veterinary prescription. Always follow the label directions on any veterinary drugs and observe all label directions for withholding periods for milk and meat.
